I’ve never heard of Biltong – what is it?
Biltong is a type of dried, cured meat that is hugely popular in South Africa, where we’re from. It’s been made and enjoyed in various forms for hundreds of years. In recent years, the high-protein, low-carb nature of biltong means it’s being rediscovered by health-conscious foodies.
What ingredients go into Protong Biltong?
Only a handpicked few. Our Premium range contains simply grass-fed British beef, pure organic spices and red wine vinegar. There’s no additives, MSG, preservatives, or sugar in, so you can be sure that you’re enjoying the very best. Our Safari range uses a pre-made spice mix with a very small amount of additives in order to give it a longer shelf life - you can see specific Ingredients on the product pages
How do you make it?
Slowly, and with a lot of love and care. We marinade the beef, vinegar and spices for 24 hours before air-drying it at a low temperature over four to five days –longer than most Biltong products. We believe that this ‘low and slow’ process results in an irresistibly improved flavour and texture.
Where is the Biltong made?
We've built a fully approved, purpose built Biltong factory in Sutton and adhere to the strictest HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point) food safety principles to bring you our produce. In our factory we have amongst other things, specialist biltong dryers, slicers and packaging machines.
Who’s it suitable for?
Everyone and anyone! The great thing about Protong Biltong is that it’s ideal for all; from those following a healthy high-protein diet, to hungry kids, to those who are just looking for a tasty, junk-free snack. Try it as a nibble with friends over drinks, an alternative to crisps at your desk at work, as a movie-night snack, something to eat post-workout – the possibilities are endless!
How healthy is it really?
Very. Our Premium range has no additives, sugar or MSG in the ingredients – just lean meat, spices and red wine vinegar. Both our Safari and Premium Biltongs come in at nearly 50% protein content each, so they’re much, much better than salty, fatty snacks. Justin Maguire, owner of Fe Fitness and experienced personal trainer, has this to say: “Protong clearly is the winning choice when it comes to a convenient dietary source…[it] provides regular healthy feeds that are simple and effective.”
What is the difference between Premium and Safari Biltong and why is there a price difference?
The table shows the main differences between the two. Both ranges of Biltong are of the highest quality and taste, but the main difference comes in the time and cost to produce the Premium range.

How long does it last once I’ve opened a bag?
Empty the bag into a bowl and mix it up – don’t seal the bowl. We advise to eat it within two days of opening. Keep mixing it up and keep it dry!
